Following making headlines across the globe for claiming that he could smell gay men and that homosexuality is caused by mothers who enjoy anal sex, the controversial Orthodox Christian bishop from Cyprus is now facing persecution by local police.

Morphou Bishop Neophytos who made his outrages comments in a June speech claimed that homosexuality was “a problem, which is usually transmitted by parents to the child.”

Neophytos then claimed that it was caused by women who enjoy having anal sex and that when mothers do that, “a desire is created, which is then transmitted to the unborn child.”

The Bishop further added that gay men can in fact be detected by their smell.

Neophytos’ comments have since been condemned across the globe, and it was recently announced by Attorney General, Costas Clerides that the island’s police have been instructed to “investigate the possibility of any criminal offence committed” by the bishop through his comments about “homosexuals and related matters.”

Clerides who had also earlier called on the bishop to retract his statements, saying that they “insult the dignity and equality” of the Cypriot people, confirmed that the Bishop may become the first person in the country to be prosecuted under new hate speech legislation put in place four years ago.
