A conservative Christian politician in the United States has resigned amid a cheating scandal following the discovery that the anti-gay politician was himself engaging in sexual activity with a man in his office.
The married man at the centre of the scandal, 33-year-old Republican Ohio State representative Wes Goodman, officially resigned on the 15th of November 2017, after an incident which was described as an “inappropriate interaction” with an unnamed adult male and an “activity unbecoming of a state representative” took place a few months ago came to light.
The unnamed man who was involved in the reportedly consensual incident is not believed to be a state employee or fellow politician.
Speaking about the incident Goodman says, “We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life.
“That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service. For those whom I have let down, I’m sorry.”
Goodman who sold himself to the public as a politician flush with conservative values of heterosexuality, traditional marriage and “religious liberty,” describes him as a “Christian. American. Conservative. Republican.”
Goodman stated on his website that he supports “the ideals of a loving father and mother, a committed natural marriage, and a caring community”.
Republican House Speaker Clifford Rosenberger said in a statement that he had met with Goodman, who had “acknowledged and confirmed the allegations.”
“It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution,” Rosenberger added.
Goodman has become the second Republican lawmaker to resign in the last few months due to inappropriate sexual behaviour and follows Senator Cliff Hite, who was accused of repeatedly propositioning a female state employee for sex.
