Over $1,500 has been raised for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation as a part of the 2017 Mr. Gay New Zealand competition.

The 2017 Mr. Gay New Zealand competition which was won by 33-year-old, Auckland resident Charlie Tredway, comprised of ten finalists from all over New Zealand, and included the competition’s first openly transgender finalist, Adrian Renor.

The competition’s charity challenge which was used to help the five judges: New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister – Paula Bennett, Labour MP – Jacinda Ardern, Auckland council’s – Richard Hills, Mr. Gay New Zealand 2016 – Bernard Lee, and Mr. Gay New Zealand 2015, now producer – Matt Fistonich, select this year’s winner.

Speaking with Eikon, Jason Myers who is the Executive Director of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation said,“We are very grateful to the Mr. Gay New Zealand contestants, and their supporters, for supporting NZAF’s work with this generous donation.”

Myers said that the funds raised by the competition, “will have a direct impact on our ability to deliver crucial education, advocacy, and services to support people living with HIV and reduce new HIV transmissions in New Zealand.”

Mr. Gay New Zealand Producer, Matt Fistonich said the Charity Challenge is one of the most important components of the Mr. Gay New Zealand Competition, “along with ensuring the competition is held at a community event to enable as many people from our community to engage with the finalists, I believe it is of paramount importance for the competition to give back as much as possible to the community in which the finalists represent.”

Mr. Gay New Zealand 2017 – Charlie Tredway will represent New Zealand at Mr. Gay World 2017 hosted by Spain, from May 5 till May 10, 2017.
