Rugby legend, Gareth Thomas has featured in a new advertisement that focuses on his struggles as a closeted gay man and his bravery to come out to his friends, family, and his team.

The powerful advertisement, made by Guinness is called Never Alone and explains that Gareth’s greatest fear wasn’t the opposition he faced on the pitch, it was the “demons” tearing him apart.

Celebrating the courage of Gareth to come out in his “darkest hour” and the support shown by his teammates when he needed them most.

Gareth Thomas, nicknamed “Alfie”, who is now retired represented Wales in both rugby union and rugby league.

He has over 100 test match appearances and was the most capped Welsh rugby union player until he was overtaken by Stephen Jones in September 2011.

He is currently ranked 12th among international try scorers and is the second highest Wales try scorer behind Shane Williams. He also won 4 rugby league caps for Wales, scoring 3 tries.

Thomas announced publicly that he is gay in December 2009. Speaking with the Daily Mail he explained, “I don’t want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player, first and foremost I am a man”.
