He swam for gold in his role as gay simmer Danny Kelly in the outstanding drama series Barracuda, but last night actor Elias Anton won silver, a Silver Logie that is, at the Annual TV Week Logie Awards in Melbourne.

Anton won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer on Australian TV in 2016 after starring in the series which has seen critical acclaim from audiences across the world.

The TV Week Logie Awards are the “Australian Emmys” held to celebrate homegrown Australian television.

In accepting his award Anton was warmly embraced by Australian international singing stars Dannii Minogue and Tina Arena on stage.

“I feel so honoured to be here tonight let alone to win this award. Congratulations to all the other nominees you’re all amazing,” Anton said in his acceptance speech.

“I would like to thank the cast and crew that I had the privilege to work with each and every day, it truly felt like a family.”

Barracuda tells the story of the fictional Danny Kelly (Elias Anton), a 16-year-old swimmer in a bid to win gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney while also dealing with challenges he is facing socially within a prestigious exclusive boys school.

The series, based on a book of the same name by author Christos Tsiolkas, examines such issues as race, culture, bullying and sexual orientation.

“Thank you to Christos for writing the book. To my mum and brother at home who I hope are watching and to all my friends thank you all for believing in me, even during moments when I might doubt myself.

“Thanks to the Director Robert Connolly and his beautiful wife and casting agent Michelle for seeing something in me even though at the time I may have lacked the experience to prove myself. This is a moment I will never forget.”
