In a shocking display of intolerance, hundreds of rainbow flags have been destroyed in the Norwegian town of Namsos, sparking outrage and concern among the local LGBTQI+ community. The incident comes just weeks before the town’s annual Pride celebration, Namdal’s Pride, scheduled for September 28.
Namsos, a small town with a population of about 8,500, made history in 2019 when it hosted its first Pride parade. However, this year’s preparations have been marred by repeated acts of vandalism targeting the rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQI+ pride and diversity.
In June, a rainbow flag outside the local cultural centre was burned, an act the organisers of Namdal’s Pride described as “petty” in an interview with local newspaper Namdalsavisa. Undeterred, they replaced the flag and pledged to put up more in September. True to their word, they decorated the town with 400 small rainbow flags on lampposts.
However, their efforts were met with swift opposition. According to Norwegian LGBTQI+ newspaper Blikk, the flags were torn down almost as quickly as they were put up. Within 48 hours, 90% of the flags had been removed, with many found burned.
“This is disrespectful and provocative. Many get scared. I get angry. Actually, I’m furious,” Ida Uldal, one of the organisers, told Namdalsavisa.
The incident has cast a shadow over the upcoming Pride celebrations, but it has also galvanised support from unexpected quarters. Namsos, known as the “cradle of rock music” in the Trøndelag region, will see the group “Metalheads against bullying” join this year’s parade, highlighting the town’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
As the LGBTQI+ community in Namsos prepares to celebrate Pride, the flag-burning incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality.
Despite the setback, the organisers of Namdal’s Pride remain determined to ensure the event goes ahead as planned, sending a clear message of love and inclusivity.
