After initially suggesting he would continue onto the 2028 Olympics, gold medallist and gay icon Tom Daley has announced his retirement from diving.

The 30-year-old, who has been a staple of Team GB for nearly two decades, revealed his decision in a heartfelt interview with Vogue magazine.

Daley’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary. From his teenage debut at the Beijing Olympics to his role as a flagbearer at the Paris Games, he’s been a consistent source of inspiration and pride for the LGBTQ+ community.

His gold medal victory alongside Matty Lee in Tokyo 2020 was a watershed moment, not just for British diving but for LGBTQ+ athletes worldwide. Daley’s openness about his sexuality has been instrumental in creating a more inclusive sporting environment.

While Daley admitted to feeling nervous about the pressure of his final Olympics, he ultimately found peace and fulfilment in the experience.

“I was eager for it to be done,” he said, “but when I walked out, and saw my husband and kids and my friends and family in the audience, I was like: ‘You know what? This is exactly why I did this.’”

Despite winning silver in Paris alongside Noah Williams, Daley confirmed he won’t be chasing another Olympic dream in Los Angeles in 2028.

“I live in LA now, so it could be a chance to do a second home Olympic games,” he said. “But for right now, I just want to enjoy this moment and we’ll see how it goes after that.”

Daley’s retirement marks the end of an era for British diving. His impact extends far beyond the pool, inspiring countless young athletes and serving as a role model for the LGBTQ+ community.

As he hangs up his goggles, we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
