A heartwarming moment between Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his fiancé, Argentinian hockey star Nicolás Keenan, has gone viral — and LGBTQ+ fans are loving the joyful visibility of two men sharing affection on the international sporting stage.
The clip, posted by Hockey Netherlands (@hockeynl) on Instagram, shows Jetten waiting on the sidelines as Keenan approaches following Argentina’s 3–0 Hockey World Cup victory over Japan.
Wearing an Argentina jersey in support of his fiancé, Jetten beams as the pair embrace before giving Keenan a tender kiss on the cheek.
It is a brief and beautifully ordinary moment between a couple. However, for many LGBTQ+ viewers, seeing that affection celebrated so openly within elite men’s sport carries considerably more meaning.
A history-making PM and an Olympic hockey star
Jetten was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Netherlands on 23 February 2026, becoming the country’s youngest-ever and first openly gay prime minister at 38.
Alongside him is Keenan, an Argentinian international field hockey player and Olympian who has become an important figure for queer visibility within men’s sport.
The pair became engaged in 2024 and have been open about their relationship on social media, regularly sharing snapshots of their life together and publicly supporting one another’s careers.
That support was on full display at the World Cup, with Jetten happily swapping Dutch colours for an Argentina shirt while cheering on his fiancé.
Naturally, commenters were quick to notice the potential diplomatic dilemma presented by Argentina and the Netherlands facing each other.
“We are excited to see Rob suffer during the Argentina vs. Netherlands match,” one joked beneath the viral video.
Prime ministerial diplomacy apparently only goes so far when your fiancé is playing for the opposition.
Australia joins the World Cup action
The 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup is being held across the Netherlands and Belgium from 15 to 30 August, bringing the men’s and women’s competitions together in one major international tournament.
Australia is represented in both competitions, with the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos joining the world’s leading hockey nations on the international stage.
That gives Australian sporting fans plenty of reason to follow the action — but for some LGBTQ+ viewers, the moment between Jetten and Keenan has become one of the tournament’s most memorable off-field highlights.
Why a simple kiss meant so much
For queer hockey fans, the most meaningful part of the clip had little to do with politics or the final score.
It was the sight of a male international athlete openly embracing his male partner — and an official mainstream sporting account celebrating the moment instead of ignoring it or treating it as controversial.
“What I would have given as a young gay guy to see this back when I played hockey,” one commenter wrote in Dutch.
“Beautiful.”
That reaction speaks to the importance of visibility in sport, particularly when openly LGBTQ+ male athletes remain relatively uncommon at the elite level.
There is nothing unusual about an athlete greeting their partner after a match. Straight players and their partners have appeared in similar moments across sporting broadcasts for decades.
Seeing a queer couple afforded that same normality can therefore be significant precisely because the moment itself is so unremarkable.
There is no grand announcement, political speech or attempt to turn their affection into a statement.
It is simply one man walking over to the person he loves after playing a World Cup match.
Love without the political performance
Jetten and Keenan both shared the viral clip through their own Instagram stories, adding to a long-running stream of affectionate posts between the couple.
Jetten has featured Keenan prominently on his social media, while Keenan regularly leaves playful and loving messages for his fiancé.
Their relationship has attracted increasing international attention since Jetten became prime minister, placing an openly queer couple in one of Europe’s most visible political positions.
Yet the couple’s appeal comes partly from how natural their relationship appears. They are not constantly performing their identities for the public or turning every affectionate moment into a political statement.
They are simply proud of one another.
For LGBTQ+ Australians, that visibility offers a quietly powerful image: an openly gay head of government proudly cheering on his queer athlete fiancé, with their affection presented as an entirely normal part of the sporting occasion.
Australia has a proud hockey culture, from community clubs and regional competitions to the international success of the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos. Seeing queer love embraced at the highest level of the sport can help younger Australian players imagine a future in which they do not have to choose between being open about who they are and pursuing their sporting ambitions.
It might only be a few seconds of video.
But for the queer kid picking up a hockey stick today who has rarely seen someone like themselves reflected at the highest levels of sport or politics, those few seconds can mean considerably more.
