The Chinese media watchdog has allowed Seek McCartney to be screened in cinemas across the country, making it the first gay film to be allowed in Chinese cinemas.
The Chinese/French co-production, which stars popular singer Han Geng and award-winning actor Jérémie Elkaïm, passed censors in its entirety after a year of consideration and deliberation.
Wang Chao who directed the film hailed the decision as “a small step for the regulator and a big step for filmmakers.”
“It was not easy, but was delightful,” he explained on Weibo.
Earlier in 2015 The Dead End Another which features a passionate kiss between two male actors also passed censors.
Cheng Qiusong a Chinese film critic said Seek McCartney was “China’s first film about a gay relationship in the true sense.”
Other LGBTI films in the past such as Brokeback Mountain, had been banned from cinemas, however are available on video-streaming sites.
China’s media watchdog removed homosexuality from its list of pornographic and vulgar content in 2010.
