A former NSW Police officer has been charged with allegedly raping a colleague and allegedly touching two other colleagues over a two year period.
Appearing in Manly local court on Monday, Matthew Cameron 31, was charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent and seven counts of sexual touching without consent.
Openly gay Cameron, who has been a volunteer for St John Ambulance in the past was also a part of a Marriage Equality photoshoot in the lead-up to the Marriage Equality plebiscite in 2017.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that Cameron appeared in court with his solicitor Andrew Hamilton and an older couple, believed to be his parents.
The alleged actions of inappropriate behaviour by Cameron, a Constable at the time, have been investigated by the NSW Police Force Professional Standards unit since mid-2023 and this led to his charging in May 2024.
Cameron resigned from the force at the end of 2023.
The former police constable remains on strict conditional bail to live at a Pokolbin address, in the Hunter Valley, until his next appearance on July 31.
In a statement provided by NSW Police, they have defended their decision not to issue a media release about Cameron’s arrest in May.
“There are times when the NSWPF do not release information on investigations, arrests or court proceedings for operational reasons, which could include information which may hinder or jeopardise an investigation,” the statement read.
Given the spotlight placed on internal NSW Police activities following the murder of Jessie Barid and Luke Davies earlier in the year by a serving police officer, their failure to be upfront with the public is baffling.
