He is a fashion designer and runs his own clothing label but it has been Mr Gay World that was a childhood dream for Mr Gay Chile, Carlos Navarro who tonight will fulfil that dream in the final of Mr Gay World 2019.
The 30-year-old Chilean was born in a small town called Peumo in the O’Higgins Region of Chile, about two hours drive south of the Capital Santiago where Navarro has lived for the past 6 years.
The Spanish speaking South American has never travelled further than his continent so the trip to South Africa has been eye-opening.
“The first reason why I signed up was to fulfil a dream as a child since I saw the contest I always wanted to be there,” Navarro explained to Gay Nation.
“Once inside the competition I began to understand that this is more than fulfilling a dream, it is being a representative of our community, to be a voice that must carry a message of respect, unity and equal rights.”
To win his way through to Mr Gay World, Navarro had to get through a strenuous casting process for Mr Gay Chile that took seven months to complete.
“It was a very demanding process, beginning the casting in August 2018 and finishing the process in February 2019 where I was crowned.
“In all this time I was able to develop different qualities and grow as a person, improve my oratory, have more security on stage.
“I was able to carry out my social campaign called “Manifesto” under my clothes brand “Ciénago”, which speaks about the empowerment we must have as a community, besides working in different social aids such as HIV prevention, it is really beautiful to be able to become a voice for our local LGBTIQ + Chilean community.”
Before heading to South Africa Navarro gained some great advice from former Chilean contestants.
“Juan Pedro Pavez Bôhle one of the former Chilean participants helped me a lot with advice and guidance on how my performance in the competition should be, through what was his experience.
“I also have the support of Pablo Salvador who has been a great guide in all this way.”
Tonight Carlos Navarro joins 21 other world delegates in the finale of Mr Gay World at the Cape Town City Hall and believes he has what it takes for the crown to be his tonight.
“My main attributes are my charisma and being authentic and I feel that these can help me fulfil the duties of Mr Gay World 2019.”
Navarro will join 21 of the other delegates on stage at the Mr Gay World Finale this Saturday night at the Cape Town City Hall starting at 6pm.
