The Victorian Government has announced the opening of expressions of interest for the 2024 Victorian LGBTIQA+ Leadership Program, a program designed to support LGBTIQA+ leaders in developing their skills and creating positive impacts for their communities.

The program, which is part of the Labor Government’s Pride in our Future: Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ strategy 2022-32, is open to LGBTIQA+ Victorians who hold a leadership position or an influential role within a Victorian LGBTIQA+ organization or group.

The program will focus on improving individual resilience and making sure leadership is impactful at an organizational level. It will also address the issue of burnout in the LGBTIQA+ sector.

Since 2018, the Victorian LGBTIQA+ Leadership Program has supported 138 leaders from Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ communities to grow their skills and connections in a safe and supportive space.

Victorian Minister for Equality Harriet Shing said this is a great opportunity for the many diverse emerging leaders across Victoria’s LGBTIQA+ organisations looking to strengthen their abilities and importantly, use these skills to create positive impacts right across the community.

“By developing their knowledge and connections, this program will lead to more queer leaders being set up to thrive, to reach their leadership potential and build strong and lasting leadership within their workplaces and beyond,” Minister Shing said.

“These inspiring leaders will help to guide us into a future where more Victorians can feel safe, enjoy equal rights and can live wholly and freely.”

The program’s announcement comes amidst ongoing criticism of the Labor Government’s handling of LGBTIQA+ issues. Some have accused the government of not doing enough to support the LGBTIQA+ community and of failing to address key issues such as discrimination and violence.

Despite these criticisms, the government has defended its record on LGBTIQA+ issues, pointing to its Pride in our Future strategy and the Victorian LGBTIQA+ Leadership Program as evidence of its commitment to the community.

Applications for the EOI round will close on Friday, 19 January. To apply go here.
