In a momentous occasion for LGBTQ+ rights in Asia, the senate in Thailand senate has overwhelmingly approved same-sex marriage legislation. The vote, passing 130 to 4 with 18 abstentions, paves the way for Thailand to become only the third country in Asia after Taiwan and Nepal to legalise same-sex marriage.

“Today is the day that Thai people will smile. It is a victory for the people,” declared Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat, a member of parliament with the progressive Move Forward Party, encapsulating the jubilant mood among LGBTQ+ advocates.

The new legislation rewrites the country’s marriage laws, replacing references to “men,” “women,” “husbands,” and “wives” with gender-neutral terms. This ensures equal rights for same-sex couples, including the ability to adopt and inherit property.

Celebrations are already underway. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and the bill, will be hosting a gathering for activists and supporters at his official residence.

Later in the evening, a rally featuring a vibrant drag show will take place in central Bangkok, where rainbow flags have adorned major shopping malls throughout Pride Month.

Support was received across the globe including a special message from the British Ambassador to Thailand Mark Gooding who spoke on social media about the wonderful decision.

This victory marks the culmination of years of tireless campaigning by LGBTQ+ activists in Thailand. While the country has enjoyed a reputation for tolerance towards LGBTQ+ individuals, a legal framework guaranteeing equal rights remained elusive.

Despite public opinion polls demonstrating overwhelming support for marriage equality, previous attempts to pass such legislation had been unsuccessful.

However, Thailand’s embrace of marriage equality isn’t without limitations. While this move represents a significant leap forward, the new laws do not address the needs of transgender and non-binary individuals.

Currently, they are still unable to change their legal gender on official documents. Activists have expressed concerns about this oversight, highlighting the continued struggle for full LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Overall, the passage of this legislation marks a historic milestone for Thailand. It not only grants same-sex couples the right to marry but also sends a powerful message of inclusivity and acceptance.

With celebrations in full swing, the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand, and across Asia, can finally rejoice in this hard-fought victory. The future holds brighter prospects for equality, paving the way for a more inclusive and respectful society.
