A Kiwi film maker takes a look back at forty-years of gay history through a countdown of his most memorable partners and lovers, highlighting the highs, lows, and progress that has been made in past years.

Paul Oremland, the man behind the documentary titled 100 Men, has cleverly utilised his past experiences to recount key moments that have defined the contemporary gay experience and key moments in our history, featuring candid and moving interviews with past partners and lovers.

Paul who says that while the significance of the men on his list does vary, he says that they all have lingered in his mind for some “small or, ahem, big reason.” Despite most of the men on his list feature only as a descriptive nickname (“US Jet Pilot,” “Closet Westie”), Paul managed to convince a hand full to appear on film, focussing on the lives they have lived.

Although the film does ask whether gay men are too fixated on sex, the documentary does have a more serious direction, following how Paul’s religious upbringing in New Zealand fuelled his inner struggle to accept his sexuality, how his first heartbreak led to a move to the UK, and also emphasising the collective experience of isolation that can come with growing up gay.
