After two decades of captivating audiences on stage, the beloved musical Wicked is set to make its cinematic debut on November 21, with a star-studded cast and notable queer representation.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), the film is the first chapter of a two-part celebration, with the second instalment scheduled for November 26, 2025.
The World Premiere of Wicked was held at Sydney’s State Theatre on Sunday night, where the lead cast members graced the yellow brick road, much to the delight of eager fans. Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum were among the stars who attended the premiere, bringing a touch of Hollywood glamour to Sydney.
Wicked, the untold story of the Witches of Oz, features an impressive cast led by Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman with green skin who has yet to discover her true power. Alongside her is Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman driven by ambition.
Their unlikely friendship, forged at Shiz University, takes a dramatic turn following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, ultimately leading them to fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Adding to the excitement is the inclusion of queer talent in the cast. Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) plays Fiyero, a carefree prince, while Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) portrays Pfannee, one of Glinda’s conniving compatriots. Their presence brings a touch of LGBTQ+ representation to the fantastical Land of Oz.
The film also stars Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz. Additionally, Keala Settle and Peter Dinklage join the cast as Miss Coddle and the voice of Dr. Dillamond, respectively.
Produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid) and David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), Wicked is adapted for the screen by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, who worked on the original stage production. The Broadway musical has been a global phenomenon, and its transition to the big screen is highly anticipated.
“Wicked is a generation-defining cinematic event,” said a spokesperson for the production. “With its powerful storytelling, stunning visuals, and exceptional cast, it promises to enchant both old and new fans alike.”
Speaking at the World Premiere, Ariana Grande expressed her excitement about the film. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this incredible journey,” she said. “The story of Wicked is so powerful, and I think audiences will be truly captivated by it.”
Cynthia Erivo echoed Grande’s sentiments, adding, “This film is a testament to the power of friendship, acceptance, and understanding. I’m honoured to bring Elphaba’s story to the big screen.”
As the holiday season approaches, Wicked stands out as a must-watch film, offering a fresh perspective on a classic tale, complete with queer representation and a stellar ensemble. Get ready to be spellbound as the untold story of the witches of Oz unfolds on the big screen. The film opens in theatres worldwide on November 21.
