Melbourne’s LGBTIQA+ community had an extra reason to celebrate Pride Month this year, with a vibrant and inclusive drag storytime event held on a specially decorated tram.

The tram, part of Switchboard Victoria’s ongoing initiative, transformed into a rolling rainbow haven on Tuesday. Victorian Minister for Equality Harriet Shing joined Switchboard CEO Joe Ball, the fabulous drag performer Frock Hudson, and a whole lot of rainbow families for a delightful storytime adventure.

This joyful event aligns perfectly with Victoria’s 10-year equality strategy, “Pride In Our Future.”

Minister for Equality Harriet Shing said the Victorian Government is committed to fostering safe, diverse, and inclusive programs specifically for LGBTIQA+ communities across the state.

“Today’s celebration aboard the colourful Switchboard Yarra Tram during Pride Month is a great reminder that in Victoria, equality is not negotiable,” Minister Shing said.

The Yarra Trams Community Partnerships Program serves as the backbone for Switchboard’s branded tram. This mobile rainbow runs along the bustling 109 and 48 routes, spreading messages of inclusivity, safety, and visibility while connecting Melbourne’s vibrant LGBTIQA+ community.

Switchboard is one of six lucky community organisations participating in Yarra Trams’ annual program this year. Their colourfully decorated tram will continue to grace Melbourne’s tram network until July 23rd.

Yarra Trams CEO Carla Purcell said they were proud to support organisations like Switchboard which deliver vital support services to LGBTQIA+ people, their families and allies in our community.

“This tram highlights the importance of LGBTIQA+ inclusion and belonging, a message more important than ever during Pride Month,” Purcell said.

As a cornerstone of the community, Switchboard provides invaluable peer-driven support services for LGBTIQA+ Victorians, their allies, friends, families, and carers. Their dedicated work ensures a safe and supportive space where everyone feels comfortable and cherished.

Switchboard CEO Joe Ball said Switchboard greatly appreciates the opportunity granted by the Yarra Trams Community Partnership Program.

“Not just in Pride Month, but every day my hope is inclusion, acceptance, and the safety of LGBTIQA+ people is as synonymous with being Victorian as a Melbourne tram is,” Ball said.

“We know people have connected with our services for the first time because they saw this tram.”

The Victorian Government’s approach to equality ensures all LGBTIQA+ Victorians have access to the resources and support needed to thrive. They aim to build a future where every member of the community feels safe, healthy and has the freedom to live life authentically and to the fullest.

So, if you’re lucky enough to spot the rainbow tram cruising through Melbourne’s streets, hop aboard and join the celebration! It’s a vibrant reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the joy of a community coming together.
