As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games unfold, Pride House has emerged as a historic hub for LGBTQ+ athletes, fans, and allies.
Situated on the Péniche Rosa Bonheur, a boat moored along the Seine River, Pride House serves as a lively gathering space filled with celebration, education, and inclusivity.
Since its opening on July 29, Pride House has welcomed visitors from around the world, offering a unique environment where LGBTQ+ supporters and Olympic competitors can come together. The venue features live broadcasts of Olympic events, starting at noon each day, followed by evening performances and special activities that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.
The first Pride House was created during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. It was established by Dean Nelson, a specialist in LGBTQ+ tourism, with the primary objective of providing a welcoming environment for gay and lesbian athletes, their support networks, and allies.
Organized by Fier-Play, a French non-profit dedicated to promoting inclusivity in sports, Pride House Paris 2024 is the first venue to receive official endorsement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This unprecedented support highlights a significant shift towards greater acceptance and visibility for LGBTQ+ individuals in the world of sports.
This year numerous high-profile Olympians serving as ambassadors for the initiative. Athletes such as Australian rock climber Campbell Harrison, Olympic diving champion Matthew Mitcham, Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy, and figure skater Javier Raya actively promote the importance of inclusivity and representation within the sports community.
Pride House not only provides a festive atmosphere but also serves as a safe haven for athletes from countries with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Jérémy Goupille, co-president of Pride House, emphasizes the importance of this inclusive environment.
“Nobody has to hide who they are,” said Jérémy Goupille.
“This iconic venue represents joie de vivre in an idyllic Parisian setting. By choosing this venue, we hope to reach as many people as possible, spreading a simple message of inclusion.
“Welcome to all in this unique environment, where inclusion and diversity shine brightly.”
This sentiment resonates deeply, as many athletes find comfort and support within the walls of Pride House.
In addition to its celebratory functions, the venue also focuses on education and advocacy. The venue hosts workshops and discussions aimed at raising awareness about LGBTQ+ issues in sports, fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding.
The organisers have launched a research laboratory with three working groups dedicated to developing practical solutions for sports associations to enhance inclusion.
As the Games progress, Pride House Paris 2024 stands as a symbol of progress and unity. It embodies the spirit of the Olympics, where athletes from diverse backgrounds come together to compete and celebrate their identities.
With free entry for all, Pride House Paris invites everyone to partake in this historic celebration.
