An ambush is being planned by four Australian Government MP’s that could see same-sex marriage a reality in Australia within a month.

The move and subsequent parliament vote would see the plebiscite policy die and the four government MP’s vote with the opposition and crossbenchers to make gay marriage legal.

In a report by Seven News, Warren Entsch will be joined by Trevor Evans, Tim Wilson, and Trent Zimmerman to carry-off the coup.

Speaking with Seven News Warren Entsch said the only real option to make same-sex marriage legal in Australia is a free vote in Parliament.

“Any sort of referendum or plebiscite will never ever see the light of day,” Entsch explained to Seven News.

“It’s one of those issues that every time it’s raised it sucks the oxygen out of everything else.”

The MP’s have devised a two-stage plan.

First, they will force a party room debate on a new private members bill that will be introduced next week when Parliament resumes. Hoping that wise heads will prevail and the party will ditch the plebiscite policy.

And if that fails then the members would go with plan B which is more aggressive.

The four MP’s would cross the floor and join labor and the 4 cross benchers to make up the 76 votes needed to suspend parliament standing orders and force a parliamentary debate and a conscience vote on the new bill.

Confident that the bill would then pass both houses of parliament.

Speaking on Sky News, Tim Wilson gave every indication the ambush is on.

“The right of a conscience vote is the right of every single liberal parliamentarian,” said Tim Wilson.

It is believed that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been told of the plan but he is compelled as the leader to follow the plebiscite policy.

“In our party, backbenchers have always had the right to cross the floor,” said Turnbull.

The ambush and subsequent Parliament debate are all expected to take place in the first few weeks of parliament after it resumes next week.
