It’s business as usual in the Liberal Party tonight as a meeting of members decided to keep the plebiscite policy intact and again present it to Parliament in the next few weeks.
After six weeks of posturing from both sides of the debate, which led to a special meeting called by the Prime Minister, the party room has considered all sides and come up with the status quo.
Seven members of the party spoke for the policy to be changed to a free vote in the parliament, but in the end, the consensus was to continue with the policy they took to the last election.
Government spokesman Mathias Cormann spoke following the meeting and suggested the plebiscite will be discussed in the joint coalition party room tomorrow and it will be determined there if they will take a full compulsory plebiscite to the parliament and it is defeated then they would move towards a non-legislative voluntary postal plebiscite.
It is expected that only after that is passed and a plebiscite votes in favour of marriage equality, the parliament would be able to have a free vote on the issue.
Comments from those that voted against the plebiscite have not been canvassed at this stage.
