Remember the will-they-won’t-they saga of Smash hitting Broadway? Buckle up, because, after years of whispers and teases, it’s finally happening! The stage adaptation of the iconic (and slightly infamous) NBC television series Smash is officially set to open early in 2025.
Weary theatregoers who’ve been clutching onto hope since the first announcement (what was it, 40,000 years ago?) can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Producers Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg first dangled the possibility of a Smash musical back in 2022. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster of workshops and hints, but this time, they’ve delivered a real trailer – and a confirmed opening date in Spring 2025, American time.
The journey to the stage has been a bit of a rewrite itself. Originally, the idea was to create a full-blown production of Bombshell, the fictional Marilyn Monroe bio-musical from the series. Remember that iconic one-night-only benefit concert back in 2015? Well, this time they’re giving us the whole Smash experience.
Get ready for a mashup of classic Smash tunes you know and love, alongside brand-new bangers from the songwriting duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Fingers crossed they haven’t forgotten about “Let’s Be Bad,” the showstopper that went from Smash to the Some Like It Hot musical. The composers themselves hinted at its possible return in a 2022 interview, so stay tuned!
While the plot details are still under wraps, we know it’ll centre around developing a Marilyn bio-musical, similar to the TV show. Award-winning writing team Bob Martin (The Prom) and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) are penning the script, with the legendary Susan Stroman taking the director’s chair. And for all you dance fans out there, Joshua Bergasse, who snagged an Emmy for his choreography on the original series, is back to make magic happen on stage.
For those who haven’t had the pleasure (or the emotional rollercoaster) of the original show, Smash aired on NBC in the US and Seven Network in Australia from 2012 to 2013. It followed the drama-filled journey of writers Julia and Tom (loosely based on power couple Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty) as they created a musical about Marilyn Monroe.
We all remember the epic battle between newcomer Karen Cartwright and seasoned pro Ivy Lynn for the lead role – that drama is sure to translate beautifully to the stage.
Produced by the original dream team of Greenblatt, Meron, and Spielberg, along with guest star extraordinaire Jennifer Hudson, Smash the Musical promises to be a behind-the-curtains extravaganza filled with glitz, glam, and the ever-present struggle for Broadway glory.
