In a powerful symbol of resilience and advocacy, Qtopia Sydney, the home of Queer storytelling, has welcomed Mr Rebbell Barnes as its newest Ambassador.
Barnes, an original 78er, is renowned for his participation in the first Sydney Mardi Gras in 1978 at just 16 years old, a moment that has forever etched his name in the history of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Barnes was the youngest person arrested and taken to the old Darlinghurst police station during the 1978 protests.
His new role as an Ambassador for Qtopia Sydney, which has reclaimed this very police station as the world’s largest home of Queer history and culture, marks a poignant full-circle moment.
“Reclaiming a space that once symbolised hate toward the gay community is incredibly meaningful,” Barnes said.
“To transform this building into a storyteller for our rich history is something truly worth celebrating.”
As an Ambassador, Barnes will collaborate closely with Qtopia Sydney to engage schools and corporations, inspiring future generations through his invaluable experiences and dedication.
“I am honoured to support Qtopia Sydney’s efforts to create a more inclusive future through its school and corporate programs,” Barnes continued.
“Understanding begins with education, and that is where real change starts.”
Greg Fisher, CEO of Qtopia Sydney, expressed his enthusiasm about the new partnership.
“Rebbell’s lifelong advocacy and rich history in the LGBTQIA+ community brings a wealth of knowledge to our programs,” Fisher said.
“Alongside our Ambassadors Katherine Wolfgramme and Stephen Spencer, Rebbell will amplify our mission to foster change, respect, and acceptance.”
Barnes brings an impressive career in Local Government spanning 44 years, notably serving as Coordinator for Records Management at Bayside Council (NSW) and as Director & President of the NSW Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia.
He is a Committee Member of the Events & Marketing Committee at Friends of The Australian Ballet and a Committee Member for the 78ers First Mardi Gras.
This new role at Qtopia Sydney further solidifies Barnes’ legacy as a trailblazer and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring that the stories and struggles of the past continue to inspire and educate future generations.
