As World Pride Month officially begins, United States President Donald Trump has done something that many never thought possible and something he hasn’t done for the past three years in office, he has recognized June as LGBT Pride Month, referencing his administration’s international initiative to decriminalize homosexuality.
In a couple of tweets, as is this President’s way, he acknowledged Pride month as well as LGBT people who have made a contribution to the US over the years.
He went further, throwing support behind LGBT people who live in countries that do not have the same equality laws like the US, mentioning a new global campaign that has been launched to decriminalise homosexuality globally.
“As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison or even executive individuals on the basis of sexual orientation,” President Trump tweeted.

The initiative Trump references is the international campaign launched by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the highest-ranking openly gay person in Trump administration.
Grenell launched the initiative with an eye toward Iran, where homosexuality is punishable by death.
Trump is the first Republican President to acknowledge LGBT Pride month
His tweets come one week after his administration moved to revoke newly won health care discrimination protections for transgender people and off the back of his actions on transgender people in the armed forces.
