Matt Fistonich Mr gay NZ
< 1 min read

Firstly, I would like to thank everybody for the overwhelming support I have received thus far from the New Zealand Gay Community and the wider public of New Zealand.

As many of you would be aware by now, (especially if you are reading this open letter) today I was awarded the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the annual Mr Gay World Competition that will be held in South Africa April 27 – May 03.

Obviously, I am extremely happy and proud to represent New Zealand and the wider Gay Community in this international competition. I have all intentions of ensuring that New Zealand will once again have the title of Mr Gay World.

I have been repeatedly asked whether I’m at all concerned about the past Mr Gay World Competition and the organising of the Mr Gay New Zealand Competition this year. My personal opinion is that I am not concerned, however, if mistakes have been made, now is the time to learn from them and to create an inclusive, transparent and professional competition.

I am a strong believer that the Mr Gay New Zealand Competition should ensure that the wider gay community are aware that all applicants are welcome. In contrast to purely being voted for because of one’s “attractiveness”, that they should be judged on their personal achievements, personality and their ability to effectively represent New Zealand and the New Zealand Gay Community at an international level.

My aim is to ensure that any future Mr Gay New Zealand competitions will be a professional and viable competition, which will see more of our future and current gay leaders apply for and participate in what should be a celebration of everybody’s uniqueness and abilities.

That’s all from me for now,

Thanks again!

Matt Fistonich.
