Mr Gay Pride Australia 2017 David Francis said that the competition is about finding and developing leaders in our community, those who celebrate diversity and promote unity.

“I would love to see a diverse range of guys applying from various backgrounds and from locations all over Australia to make this a truly national competition,” David said.

“It is important to remember that Mr Gay Pride Australia is not a beauty contest. A candidate’s physical appearance is not assessed at any stage of the competition and does not form part of the judging criteria.”

Finalists will compete in two online challenges where they will write an opinion piece to be published and then be subjected to a public vote.

When the finalists come together in Melbourne the challenges will include a photo shoot, LGBTI issues test, a personal interview, public speaking at Midsumma Carnival and a charity challenge.

All challenges will be scored by a judging panel and the winner will get the chance to attend Mr Gay World 2018 as Australia’s representative.

David Francis attended the finals of Mr Gay World in Spain this year where he placed seventh out of 21 competing countries. This year David will be involved in the organisation of the competition as well as take on a role as a judge.

“Representing Australia [at Mr Gay World] has to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” said David.

“Having the opportunity to meet like-minded representatives from all around the world has given me friends for life and valuable insight into how other countries fight for LGBTI+ inclusion.

“Australia is yet to win the Mr Gay World title but I am encouraged that we have the talent to take home the title in 2018, the tenth anniversary of the event.”
