Russia’s Parliament next week will vote on a bill that would ban men from coming out as gay.
The Russian News Service is reporting that the bill, if passed, would punish those who come out with a 15-day prison sentence. Additionally, any public displays of same-sex affection from men would also result in jail time and a fine of 5,000 rubles ($99 NZD or $92 AUD).
The proposed measure comes from two senior Russian Communist MPs, Ivan Nikitchuk and Nikolai Arefyev.
The bill is only targeting gay men. Lawmakers said women are more “reasonable” and can “manage their emotions.”
“We have our own idea of honor and conscience, and we must respect tradition. The scum that comes to us from the West is unnatural to Russia. These unconventional sexual desires do nothing but disgust normal, smart, healthy people,” Nikitchuk said, according to the Russian News Service.
“It is sick that disgusting people feel they should be treated the same.”
Russia’s current anti-gay “homosexual propaganda” laws ban any sort of LGBT Pride, but the new measure carries a 15-day jail sentence for anyone who wants to support the rights of the LGBT community.
Nikitchuk and Arefyev said their reason for creating the new anti-gay measure is because the country’s current laws against the LGBT community and non-traditional relationships are not “effective” enough,” GSN writes.
