Heartstopper star Kit Connor has opened up about how he became openly bisexual under pressure from fans.
At 19, Kit Connor, who plays bisexual rugby player Nick Nelson on the Netflix series Heartstopper, was forced to admit his own bisexuality on twitter.
Connor, seen hand in hand with co-star Maia Reficco, was accused of cheating and “queerbaiting”, forcing him to clarify his position. “I’m bi. Congratulations, you forced an 18-year-old guy to open up,” he wrote then, and then deleted his tweet.
In a new interview with British Vogue, Kit Connor admitted that he felt uncomfortable with the constant attention. He would be happy to come out in a different way, not on social networks and not under the scrutiny of the public.
“It wasn’t something I was ready to talk about back then,” Connor admitted.
At the same time, despite earlier claims that he was “forced” out of the closet, Connor said that, in a sense, it was a release for him.
“Actually, I don’t regret it. It was in many ways a step towards freedom,” he added.
After the success of Heartstopper, Kit Connor has become a hero to many young people who are questioning their identity.
At the beginning of the week, the official trailer for the second season was released.
The series, which follows the romance of two queer teenagers, has become a Netflix hit and has been banned in Russia.
Season two returns to Nick and Charlie who are navigating their new relationship. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.
