Netflix has released the first look at the forthcoming RuPaul scripted drag queen series AJ and the Queen.
Created by RuPaul Charles and Michael Patrick King (of Sex and the City fame), AJ and the Queen stars RuPaul as Robert Lee, aka drag queen Ruby Red, whose dreams of opening his own drag club are dashed when he’s scammed by a pair of grifters played by Josh Segarra (Arrow) and Tia Carrere (Relic Hunter).
He’s forced to go on a cross-country roadshow, and along the way picks up a 10-year-old street kid named AJ (Izzy G.) who stows away in his RV, with Robert stepping up to become AJ’s surrogate parent.
Together they help each other navigate the heartbreaking past, the challenging present and a hopeful future as Ruby and AJ travel the USA searching for a little happiness and the very best breakfast waffle.
Part Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Part Touched by an Angel. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.
The new comedy series will debut in early January on netflix in the US with no date for Australia or New Zealand yet.
