After a gruelling three days of media, interviews, tours and presentations in the Spanish Capital of Madrid, the 21 country delegates for Mr Gay World 2017 have now headed south to Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of Africa for time by the beach before the final few days of competition and the crowning of Mr Gay World 2017.
The Canary Island’s largest is Gran Canaria and it is one of the greatest gay tourist centres in Europe.
Situated just a few hours away from the principal cities on the European continent, it brings in travelers from a thousand different places.
13% of the total tourism numbers for Gran Canaria each year is LGBT, and many of those come for one week a year, the Maspalomas Pride Festival.
This year the Mr. Gay World competition is the feature event of the festival with the finale being held amongst the major gay clubs and events in the centre of Maspalomas on Wednesday 11 May.
Today the 21 delegates were introduced to the local media following words from leading Gran Canaria dignitaries including Ramón Suárez Ojeda (Councilor of Tourism of San Bartolomé de Tirajana), Ángel López Navarro (Advisor to the Councilor of the Gran Canaria Tourist Board) and Fernando Ilarduya (President of Freedom and Organizer Maspalomas Gaypride).
Following the warm welcome from locals in their native Spanish, President of Mr. Gay World Eric Butter briefly spoke of how warm the reception had been to the competition conducting its final in Maspalomas.
“We are very happy to celebrate the Grand Final of the Mr. Gay World 2017 here, in Maspalomas Gran Canaria.
“We look forward to getting to know Maspalomas and I’m sure we are all going to enjoy our time here.”
