An online petition has been launched with the aim of giving Air France flight stewards the option to opt-out of flights to Iran, where homosexuality is punishable by death.
Gay flight stewards who currently work for Air France have attempted to negotiate with the French carrier, pleading with the airline to allow them the option to opt-out of flying to Iran as opposed to forcing them.
“Sure, our sexuality isn’t written on our passports and it doesn’t change the way we work as a crew,” explains Laurent M.
“But it is inconceivable to force someone to go to a country where his kind are condemned for who they are.”
The letter written by Laurent M. to Air France highlights that homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and punishment for the “crime” ranges from a penalty of 74 lashes to the death penalty.
Along with Iran, Air France currently also flies to Saudi Arabia, Uganda and Zimbabwe which are renowned for their homophobic and Anti-LGBTI policies.
The latest petition by Air France flight stewards follows a recent decision by Air France to enable female stewards the right to refuse to fly to Iran’s capital, Tehran without facing punishment.
