One of the most conservative rural cities in Australia has turned rainbow today in support of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
Mildura Rural City Council for the first time has hosted a rainbow flag raising ceremony to support the day on the Latrobe University campus.
Mildura Pride reference group member James Price explained to the local ABC news reporter that the rainbow flag-raising ceremony was part of the council’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer Inclusion Plan.
“This day is a perfect day example for our community to come together,” Mr Price said to ABC News.
“Our slogan in Mildura is that we are the most livable, people-friendly community in Australia.
“This is a great way for council and our reference group to celebrate that message in a really positive way, and it’s the first time that the day has really been celebrated in Mildura, so I guess it’s a bit of a historic day for our community.”
Mr Price said the act of flying the rainbow flag sent a symbolic message that councillors and council staff were standing with members of the LGBTIQ community.
“Traditionally, Mildura is a reasonably conservative sort of place so I guess that will add weight and significance to what is happening, and that is a really good step forward for a regional community like Mildura,” he said.
