A gay-friendly rugby club in France has taken the end of year calendar fundraising drive one step further and has posed naked for their 2020 edition.
The Tou’Win club in Toulouse was created in 2006 as a gay-friendly club in an association that fights against homophobia in sport.
In 2017, the Toulouse team was European Champion in their category at the Union Cup in Madrid, this year the players decided to take the step and pose naked for their calendar, like Gods of the Stadium.
“This calendar is above all a good slice of fun. But it’s also a way to show oneself. And finally, it allows us to finance our travels in tournaments,” said the club’s website.
Although less present in the world of rugby than football, homophobia remains a hot topic in sports.
The case of the former Wallabies star Israel Folau made a lot of noise in France when he posted on Instagram that, “Drunkards, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolaters, Hell is waiting for you. Repent! Only Jesus can save you.”
Cyril Brocardo, president of the Tou’Win club, also reacted following the furore of his Australian counterpart.
“Why do these people feel threatened by something that concerns their neighbour? How is it looking at them? There is one thing embarrassing in these remarks, and contradictory is that he allows himself for a Christian to say what God thinks,” he said speaking with the French Rugby news website.
“This is how the Tou’Win association carries the banner of tolerance in a world still full of clichés without sinking into communitarianism.
“The goal is not to make a gay and community team. We do not want to partition, but to give an opportunity to homosexuals to practice a sport they love, and the straight people to open their minds,” said Brocardo.
The naked rugby calendar is for sale online for 10 Euros and the calendar has no less than 35 player photos spread over 25 pages.
