House of Cards star Kevin Spacey has opened up about a longstanding Hollywood rumour when he came out as gay on Sunday night in the US.
Amid accusations from Anthony Rapp that Stacey made sexual advances on Rapp when he was just 14, the “American Beauty” star revealed that he has had relationships with men and women throughout his life.
In a written statement released on Twitter Stacey said;
“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women,” Spacey said.
“I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behaviour.”
Rapp accused Spacey of trying to seduce him when he was 14.
The 46-year-old actor claims in an extensive interview with Buzzfeed that Kevin Spacey climbed on top of him in bed when he was just 14 years old.
In 1986, when Rapp was starring in the Broadway production of “Precious Sons” with Ed Harris and Judith Ivey, the actor says he was at a party at the home of Spacey, who had a supporting role in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” at the same time.
The youngest one at the party, Rapp told Buzzfeed that he went to watch TV in a different bedroom.
Past midnight, Spacey, now drunk, allegedly walked into the bedroom.
“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me,” Rapp told Buzzfeed.
“He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Eventually, the actor pushed Spacey off and left, he claims.
In the statement, Spacey has apologised to Rapp saying he could not remember the alleged 1986 incident but said he was “horrified” by the story.
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago,” the 58-year-old said in a statement.
“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour.”
