Louw Breytenbach representing South Africa has been crowned Mr Gay World 2021 and has vowed to be visible and accountable to the LGBTIQ+ community and not just another “cover boy”.
Breytenbach, 22, was announced the winner after a stunning virtual finale which was the culmination of two weeks of challenges for ten delegates from across the globe.
The mental health advocate who has survived three suicide attempts and is living with seven diagnosed mental health disorders, has also survived conversion therapy, religious bigotry and has gone on to study theology.
“South Africa we did it and we are bringing home the crown for the first time in a decade,” Breytenbach said in a pre-recorded message.
“Thank you so much for believing in me and thank you to the organisers of this wonderful event for taking on the monumental task of pulling this off online I think you are absolutely amazing.
“Winning Mr Gay World 2021, is such a huge honour. I am ready to work for our community and look forward to the difference I can help make in the LGBTIQA+ Community.
“Please hold me accountable if I am not visible in this community, if I’m not working for mental health in the LGBTIQ+ community, if I’m not breaking the stigma around HIV+ and Transphobia, if I am not working towards a more inclusive, diverse society, hold me accountable because we deserve more than just another cover boy.”
Moved online due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, the Mr Gay World 2020 and 2021 competitions were streamed via the Mr Gay World YouTube channel and included pre-recorded pieces from all delegates as well as visuals from areas across the host country South Africa.
After the challenges were completed the top five ranked delegates were then asked a further question to allow the top three to be announced.
Louw Breytenbach from South Africa was presented as the winner with Joel Rey Carcasona from the Philippines announced as 1st Runner-up and Joshuan Aponte from Puerto Rico announced as 2nd Runner-up.
