As the 2015 Mr Gay World competition kicks off on Monday in Cape Town, we thought it was timely to run through all of the delegates for this year and give you a brief roundup of who they are, what they do and whether they are the most suitable to be crowned Mr Gay World 2015.
There has been two withdrawals, one was Mr Gay Cameroon who was unable to gain a visa to attend and the other Mr Gay India who has gone into hiding due to threats against his family. So that leaves us with 21 willing competitors.
Below are the first 11 delegates (in country alphabetical order) with links to their social media for you to find out more.
The remaining 10 delegates and their profiles are here.
Age: 27
Lives: In Melbourne (Originally from New Zealand)
Profession: Principal Security Consultant
Why Mr Gay World?: Was disowned by his family at 15 and wants to use what happened to him to positively effect the lives of others across the world.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (49 followers) – Instagram (1340 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (858 views)
Thoughts: Has a big chance of winning given Australia is yet to take away the title
Mr Gay Belgium – Jordy De Smedt
Age: 20
Lives: Antwerp
Profession: Personal Trainer
Why Mr Gay World?: Was an overweight teenager with no friends and took it on himself to get fit and make something of his life. He wishes to help others to do the same.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter – Instagram (2,455 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (1,535 views)
Thoughts: Fit looking guy, great story and his intro video is high quality. Can he impress?
Mr Gay Colombia – Jorge Escribano Pelaezr
Age: 32
Lives: In Madrid, Spain (Not Colombia)
Profession: Host and Actor
Why Mr Gay World?: Wants to break the stereotypes in the community. He believes it should be less about the looks and the biceps and more about the heart.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (1,635 followers) – Instagram (807 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (504 views)
Thoughts: One of the older candidates but certainly has the experience for this type of competition. Feels as though hes in it more for the Mr Gay Colombia title than Mr World but time will tell.
Mr Gay Cuba – Leonardo Piloto Gonzalez
Age: 35
Lives: Paris, France (Not Cuba)
Profession: Music Producer, Composer & DJ
Why Mr Gay World?: Says Cuba is one of the less LGBT accepting countries in the world and wants to change that in some small way by winning Mr Gay World.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (1,892 followers) – Instagram – Intro Youtube Video (297 views)
Thoughts: The equal second oldest delegate and certainly one of those that speaks the least English according to his intro video. This will obviously go against him as the competition language is English. But great to see someone a little out of the mould entering.
Mr Gay Czech Republic – Daniel Frohlich
Age: 20
Lives: Liberec, Czech Republic
Profession: Shipping Worker
Why Mr Gay World?: He wants to help the elderly and children but above all wants the world to know that although countries like his from the outside look democratic inside they are riddled with hatred and malice against minorities like gays.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter – Instagram – Intro Youtube Video (196 views)
Thoughts: Obviously still finding it tough being gay in his own country. This is what the Mr Gay World competition should be about, embracing candidates like Daniel.
Mr Gay Dominican Republic – Alejandro Torres-Solanot Martinez
Age: 26
Lives: Madrid, Spain (Not Dominican Republic)
Profession: Student
Why Mr Gay World?: He wants to travel and meet people (sounds very beauty pageant-y) but makes a good point that he is the first delegate from the Caribbean and no Spanish speaker has ever won Mr Gay World so he thinks its about time.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter – Instagram – Intro Youtube Video (193 views)
Thoughts: Another of the many delegates representing countries that they no longer live in. Lovely guy, with good intentions but I don’t think a chance this year.
Mr Gay Finland – Tomi Lappi
Age: 24
Lives: Helsinki, Finland
Profession: Professional Dancer
Why Mr Gay World?: Tomi wants to be a voice for both the positive and negative aspects of gay life worldwide and to espouse that being is more than just your sexuality.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (710 followers) – Instagram (1,748 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (386 views)
Thoughts: Interesting that he was second place in Finland’s competition last year and yet could take out the Mr World Competition this year. Has to be high up the list.
Mr Gay Germany – Klaus Burkart
Age: 21
Lives: Wangen im Allgäu, Germany
Profession: Milk Technician
Why Mr Gay World?: Wants to become an advocate for gay rights and help young gays from around the world come out.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter – Instagram – Intro Youtube Video (1,134 views)
Thoughts: Well if there was a more confident contestant than this guy then show me. Funny that he represented Austria last year and didn’t win but pops up now as Mr Gay Germany. Time will tell.
Mr Gay Hong Kong – Emmanuel Mass Luciano
Age: 35
Lives: Hong Kong, China
Profession: Fashion Designer
Why Mr Gay World?: Will use his title to strive for a better life and equality for the whole LGBT community and wants to take that message to a global audience.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (103 followers) – Instagram (4,912 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (2,119 views)
Thoughts: Equal second oldest is the competition but I would confidently say he is the favourite at this stage. His social media presence and media has been substantial and would be a great ambassador for the community worldwide.
Mr Gay Iceland – Troy Michael Jonsson
Age: 28
Lives: Reykjavík, Iceland
Profession: Bartender
Why Mr Gay World?: Will use his title to gain traction on a worldwide project which has a mission to end the ban on gay men donating blood. The project is called the “The Bleeding Love Project”.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter (903 followers) – Instagram (1,530 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (303 views)
Thoughts: Terrific to see one of the delegates actually having a specific reason/cause to fight for if they win the competition. Another delegate competing for the second year in a row. At least he has remained in the same country. I wish him all the best
Mr Gay Ireland – Marcos Vinicius Barboza
Age: 27
Lives: Dublin, Ireland
Profession: Personal Trainer
Why Mr Gay World?: Will use his title to gain traction on a worldwide project which has a mission to end the ban on gay men donating blood. The project is called the “The Bleeding Love Project”.
Social Media: Facebook – Twitter – Instagram (2,786 followers) – Intro Youtube Video (1,507 views)
Thoughts: If this was purely a beauty/abs contest then he’d surely be a favourite. Great story about moving from Brazil to live in Ireland and with the marriage equality vote coming up soon his victory would be a great boost for the community in Ireland. Surely a chance.
