The world’s sporting spotlight is once again on New Zealand as we are hosting the Cricket World Cup for the next six weeks along with Australia.
New Zealand started well on Saturday with a big win over Sri Lanka at Christchurch.
The World Cup is made up of the best 14 teams, or at least the 14 countries that actually play cricket. They’ve even split the UK into Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales just to make up the numbers.
Early signs are the England may struggle while hosts New Zealand and Australia should be very hard to beat.
So when it comes to the stars of the game, who should we be keeping an eye. Our Eikon editorial team scoured the teams and came up with our Top 9 Eikōnic players of the World Cup
1. AB De Villiers – South Africa
One of the world’s leading batsmen and certainly leads the pack on our top 9.
2. Tim Southee – New Zealand
A gifted bowler who even played rugby in his day, hes the shining light for the Black Caps
3. Stuart Broad – England
Has struggled recently with form and injury but this exciting bowler doesn’t struggle in the looks department
4. Pat Cummins – Australia
He was a rising star at 17 but has never hit the heights due to form and injury but hes now back to his best and looking good too.
5. Marlon Samuels – West Indies
The elder statesman of the competition, still keeps fit and looks to have an impact this year
6. David Miller – South Africa
An all round sportsmen, this 25 year old is one of the worlds best one day players. To be truthful he’s probably our office favourite #JustSaying
7. Mitchell Johnson – Australia
We couldn’t have a list like this without a topless, tattooed Mitchell Johnson. His photo-shoots pre “the mo” are still legendary.
8. Mitchell Marsh – Australia
His first appearance at a World Cup but with a 5 wicket haul last weekend against England he’s set to star this year. Our one to watch (In more ways that one)
9. Jos Buttler – England
We had to squeeze this guy in. Talented with the bat and behind the stumps, Jos Buttler is one of England’s brightest up-and-coming talents.
But did we get them right. There are 210 players to pick from and we chose 7. Surely theres someone you like that we missed. Let us know.
