Progress on the Cards For North Carolina?

Progress could finally be on the cards for the southern state of North Carolina, with an end in sight for the controversial bathroom bill.

Following Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, the American Civil Liberties Union, and multiple transgender people suing the state on the proposed HB2 Bill, progress appears to have been made with approval from a judge being needed to remove some of the bill’s most harmful and controversial portions.

With the removed sections of the bill essentially allowing transgender people to legally use bathrooms that match their gender identity, Democratic Governor Roy Cooper explains, “For too many reasons, it is not in our state’s best interest to remain in drawn-out court battles that still linger because of HB 2.”

Despite the possible progress, any changes will firstly require a judge to sign off the amendments, flying in the face of Republican lawmakers who first enacted the bathroom bill last year, causing the cancellation of major revenue gathering events including concerts and professional sporting events.

With transgender individuals still faced scrutiny and discrimination regarding bathroom choices, Governor Roy Cooper has further signed an executive order barring any state agency from discriminating against an individual on the basis of gender identity.
